Just as a walk-a-thon raises money by collecting donations or pledges for
walking a set distance, an erg-a-thon allows rowers from all of NRRA’s adult and
youth programs to raise pledge money for completing a set distance on a rowing
machine, known as an “erg.”
Youth from the Racing Team and Development Team, as well as Adults from the
Masters Racing and Intermediate programs are encouraged to row 10,000 meters.
This challenge may be completed in 40-70 minutes, rowing at a steady pace.
Matthew Zucker Memorial Fund Scholarships
All money raised during the 2008 Ergathon will go directly to youth scholarships
through the Matthew Zucker Memorial Fund. Last year generous donors helped to
raise over $28,000 during the Erg-a-thon, which funded youth program, supported
NRRA’s Outreach Program “ROAR,” and bought parts to refurbish 10 ergs for
outreach programs.
Matthew Zucker (1978-1998)
Matthew Zucker was a member of the youth rowing program from 1994-1996. His
rowing experience was instrumental in helping to improve his self-discipline,
self-confidence, and to give him a focus he could soon embrace. Shortly before
his high school graduation, he fell victim to brain cancer and died in 1998.
His family established the Matthew Zucker Memorial Fund within the NRRA to
provide rowing scholarships for students who require financial assistance in
order to row.
You can help by:
Donating household items for the NRRA tag sale (proceeds go towards
equipment)
Volunteering to work at the erg-a-thon (organize and price tag sale items,
set up ergs, registration, food service, tear down)
Erging 10 or 10,000 meters the day of the event (no experience required)
