Catch the Drive
During the summer of 2008 rowers from the Varsity Girls Team were presented with the idea of creating a program to get low-income peers involved in a healthy, active lifestyle. Catch the Drive was created as a peer-to-peer rowing program, with athletes working together to engage their peers in the sport of rowing. In order to make the program happen, the girls took on leadership by planning practices, pitching the idea to potential donors, designing a program web site, and contacting potential participants individually.
Since its inception, Catch the Drive has turned into one of NRRA’s most successful outreach programs, with over half of participants joining future programs as it is a “safe” way for girls with little or no athletic experience to become involved in a sport. NRRA teams with both Brien McMahon and Norwalk High Schools to present this “girls-only” rowing program.
