Rowing Strong, Rowing Together
Teen mothers face a unique set of challenges, including lack of financial resources, difficulty staying in school, and isolation from family and friends. By introducing young mothers to rowing, girls have the opportunity to form friendships with girls from similar backgrounds, engage in physical activity, and build self-esteem and confidence while having “alone-time” from their child.
In the past two years NRRA has partnered with the Bridgeport Health Department’s Parent Aid Program, YoungLives, and Family and Children’s Agency’s Young Mother’s Program of to create NRRA’s Rowing Strong, Rowing Together Team. During the spring and summer athletes prepare for the Young Parents Regatta, held in Mt. Holyoke, MA. In 2009 NRRA brought home the silver medal in their race against other Rowing Strong, Rowing Together teams from Connecticut and Massachusetts in a 2,000 meter race.
